Helmut Lang ensembles go on show in Vienna

The Fashion Museum has lent two ensembles by Austrian designer Helmut Lang to MAK – Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna for its Show Off: Austrian Fashion Design exhibition.

4 March 2020

The exhibition showcases the wide spectrum of designers who live, work and are educated in Austria, covering fashion in all its facets, from the 1980s until the present day.

The two ensembles, one menswear, one womenswear from Helmut Lang’s 2004/2005 collections, are part of a large and generous donation from the designer. In 2010 Helmut Lang selected 12 museums worldwide in which to place his archive. The Fashion Museum Bath was one of those museums; and the Helmut Lang Archive at the Museum now includes over 150 pieces, complete catwalk looks from the early years of the 21st century.

It is such an honour therefore to include these key signature pieces from Mr Lang’s work in fashion in this major exhibition.

The womenswear ensemble includes a smart tailored black wool coat with a large asymmetric satin-faced lapel, and fine black wool tapered trousers with a satin stripe on the outside leg, teamed with a pair of horse-hair ankle-strap stiletto sandals.

The menswear ensemble is a black soft cotton long-sleeved top and black leather trousers, worn with a silver panel cummerbund-style belt and silver tipped lace up shoes.

Show Off: Austrian Fashion Design runs until 12 July 2020.
