Rozanne Hawksley: The gloves that are an artist’s signature

As part of our Glove Stories display, this ‘mini-exhibition’ features the work of textile artist Rozanne Hawksley.

Rozanne (b.1931) has always been fascinated by gloves. As a child, she loved to watch the Royal Marines bandsmen in their white gauntlet gloves, when her father took her to the Garrison Church in Portsmouth.

Gloves became a signature motif throughout Rozanne’s work, which addresses universal themes of love and loss, mourning and remembrance. She uses worn and degraded gloves almost as an artist’s signature, and also incorporates delicate bird and animal bones and other found materials.
