Sport and Fashion exhibition goes for gold
December 2011
The winning combination between the worlds of
sport and fashion will take first place at Bath & North East
Somerset Council’s Fashion Museum in Bath next year.
As Great Britain prepares to celebrate
the London 2012 Olympics, the Museum’s “Sport and Fashion”
exhibition, opening on 4 February, will trace how historic
sportswear has influenced the creations of contemporary
designers.
With over 50 pieces on display, the show
offers something for everyone – from the sports enthusiast to the
casual follower of fashion or those with a passing interest in
popular culture.
Exhibits include historic skiing and
tobogganing outfits; such as the gold medal-winning ensemble Amy
Williams wore at the 2010 Winter Olympics – alongside
up-to-the-minute fashion pieces like a gold and silver body suit by
designer Pam Hogg, who also designs second skin stage wear for the
singer Jessie J.
Councillor Cherry Beath, The Council's Cabinet
Member for Sustainable Development, said: “This is a really
imaginative celebration of how sport and fashion are intertwined –
with eye-catching examples such as Serena Williams’ vivid blue
tennis dress transforming the look on the court, and the Victoria
Beckham-designed ‘hoody’ gown which appears to take inspiration
from the world of boxing.
“From the race track to the catwalk to the
high street – there’s a shared thread running through all these
elements which the ‘Sport and Fashion’ exhibition explores. Bath
& North East Somerset Council’s Fashion Museum is proud to be
showing some iconic garments connected with such high profile names
in the sporting and fashion arenas, including Maria Kirilenko and
Stella McCartney.”
A one-off photographic display will run
alongside the “Sport and Fashion” exhibition profiling the work of
the influential stylist Ray Petri who created Buffalo, a design
collective of young talented photographers, stylists and models in
the 1980s. Petri’s ground-breaking work – putting together a
signature look mixing up sportswear and fashion – created a cool
aesthetic and produced some of the most famous front covers of the
iconic magazine “The Face”.
The “Sport and Fashion” exhibition opens on 4
February 2012. The Fashion Museum is open daily from 10.30am to 4pm
(exit 5pm). For more information visit http://www.fashionmuseum.co.uk/
