August 2010
Bath & North East Somerset Council’s
Fashion Museum has announced the winners of their young fashion
photography competition inspired by the exhibition, Photographing
Fashion: British Style in the 1960s.
The competition, launched earlier this summer
proved hugely popular and drew 230 entries from the local area and
across the globe including Australia and the Ukraine. The
photographs were judged in three different age categories with nine
winning photographs chosen. All the winning photographs are
displayed on the Fashion Museum website http://www.fashionmuseum.co.uk/.
Councillor Terry Gazzard, the Council’s
Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure & Culture said:
“It’s fantastic to see that so many young
people both from the local area and across the world have been
inspired by the British Style in the 1960s exhibition at the
Council run Fashion Museum. Bath & North East Somerset Council
is incredibly proud of our world class arts and heritage and this
competition is a great contribution to this .”
Manager of the Council run Fashion Museum,
Rosemary Harden, said:
“We have been overwhelmed by all the entries.
Its lovely to know how the display at the Fashion Museum has
spurred everybody on, and fantastic to see the wealth of talent out
there. To everybody who's entered, keep on photographing, and keep
'your eye on the past'. You can learn so much, and get so much
inspiration for what has gone before, and the Fashion Museum is a
great place to do that.”
First prize in the under 16s age group went to
15 year old Harley K-C from Stroud in Gloucestershire with his
photograph entitled My friends. Harley explains:
“I went out with some of my friends for a photoshoot. One of them
wanted me to take a few snaps of her textiles final piece and I
thought it could be a nice setting for her piece"
First prize in the 17-21 age group went to 21
year old Sofia Plakidyuk from the Ukraine. Her winning entry,
Something About Coco, she explains : “Is part of a
fashion story about young Ukrainian designers. I wanted to make
something with a very graphic geometric quality. I started
photographing as a hobby when I was 14 and now it's my main
interest. I'm shooting for leading and young Ukrainian fashion
designers and also I have started making fashion videos as
well”.
1st prize in the 22+ age group went
to Alex Lockett, a 22 year old photography graduate, originally
from Crewe in Cheshire and now working as a photographer’s
assistant in London. His photograph Gainsborough
Road is part of a series of photographs based on kitchen
sink dramas in 1960's British films. Alex has also made stop motion
films to accompany the stills.
Local girls Ava Saunders (9) and Ellen Sanders
(9) from Batheaston school have won 3rd prize in the
Under 16 age group with their photograph: What to wear at a
wedding. Ava who is modelling a satin bridesmaid
dress says " I like acting and found it helped me in making lots of
different poises." Ellen took the photographs deciding on the
backdrop of a Georgian doorway to match Ava's elegant
clothing. Ellen's mum said they had lots of fun taking the
photos and working together for the competition. They were
delighted that their photos appeared on the Fashion Museum's
website. Ellen and Ava's favourite fashion style setters are
Lady Gaga and Cheryl Cole.
