Is the Fashion Museum the same as the Museum of Costume, Bath?

Yes. The Fashion Museum changed its name from the Museum of Costume in summer 2007.

 

Who owns the Fashion Museum?

The Fashion Museum is owned by Bath and North East Somerset Council. The section of the Council that manages the Fashion Museum is Heritage Services, which also includes the Roman Baths Museum, the Victoria Art Gallery and the Bath Record Office. The Fashion Museum is housed in the Assembly Rooms building, which is owned by the National Trust but managed by Heritage Services.

Heritage Services mission statement is: Giving people opportunities for learning, inspiration and enjoyment through access to museum and archive collections and historic public buildings.

 

How long has the Fashion Museum been in Bath?

The Museum of Costume was opened in the Assembly Rooms on 23 May 1963. It was founded by Doris Langley Moore, a designer, collector, writer, & scholar, who gave her famous private collection of costume to the city of Bath.

 

How is the Fashion Museum funded?

The Fashion Museum is funded by Bath and North East Somerset Council. The Fashion Museum is part of the Heritage Services business unit and is funded by admissions income and income from retail, catering and venue hire.

 

How many people visit the Fashion Museum each year?

We welcome about 100,000 visitors to the museum each year. Some visitors are fashion specialists: the majority are tourists to Bath who purchase a saver ticket to the Fashion Museum at the Roman Baths Museum.
